Retail Customer Care & Cashier Training introduced

May 2014 saw the introduction of A Customer Care and Cashier course, a retail customer care programme including point of sale system training, focused on equipping learners for a career in the retail industry.

A group of 16 students from DuNoon was trained during this course in an initiative with Learn to Earn and the City of Cape Town.

Of these students, 9 have qualified for the Jumpstart Work Experience, which is 5 ½ to 6 day experiential training  at a Mr Price Group store where they will gain valuable experience and stand the chance of being considered for employment – dependent of performance and availability of casual positions in the stores. To qualify for the Jumpstart programme, students need to be between the ages of 18 and 30 and have a Grade 12 certificate. They are also required to pass an assessment measuring business maths calculations, bar code recognition (attention to detail) and customer service. English communication skills are assessed during a one-on-one interview with a Jumpstart coordinator.

Opportunities for job shadows (and hopefully placements) are being sought for the other graduates as well.

The jam-packed 4 weeks of training was received extremely well by the students, who had this to say

Sinazo Salakutyelwa: “I’ve learnt how to improve my self-esteem, stay positive, follow my instincts and aim higher. I’ve also learned that I need to be trustworthy if I want to make progress.”

Refeloe Lehana : It was good to discover how to manage conflict. A skill I need to use at home – and also with my fellow students.

Nokutola Nomana : I’ve gained experience and am more interested in furthering my education.

Princess Kula : I’ve grown in my relationships. I’m now able to stand in front of people and represent an idea. I can also work with people and enjoy working in a group.

Avuyonke Sotyhantya : I have a higher self-esteem as I was shy and did not trust myself. I can aim higher now and know that I need to be trustworthy, honest and work hard to fulfill my dreams and goals.

Olwethu Makeleni : I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. Being at FCD has refreshed me, making me wise and ready to learn something new every day.

Fikiswa Sikota : The training has taught me how to cope in this world. I’ve learnt that I need to take good care of myself and be aware of the world around me. I enjoyed the relaxed environment, where we could crack jokes and have fun. FCD taught me how I can achieve my goals, manage money and put God first.
